MET Gala 2024: The Guests Who Didn’t Follow the Dress Code
The theme lies awake in Sleeping Beauties, and the dress code is the garden of flourishing ideas. Yet, some ran out of time
Being fashion’s important night, the MET Gala is a time to go all out: to go for the extremes, to ride the waves of ingenuity, to hinder all forms of judgement. It’s to allow complete immersion of the contrived construct of what fashion is and what it can be. Alas, however, there are some that don’t follow the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” nor the dress code “Garden of Time,” losing influence or structure of the upheld event. Where is the garden here, and why is it losing its water?

Chris Hemsworth
There is no love and thunder for this co-chair at the event, a baffling thought considering they announced the group via a group chat—which he seemingly left after the post. He makes beige look beige.
Zoë Saldaña
Known to be blue in Avatar or green in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zoë Saldaña went straight for the safest choice possible: brown.
Doja Cat
The MET Gala is about fashion aspiration, not relatability. Doja Cat’s look can be afforded by anyone.
Cara Delevingne
Cara Delevingne went out of time, to 2018’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” specifically.
Kaia Gerber
This is literally a white dress.
Naomi Campbell
Don’t go chasing waterfalls, even if the theme enhances the nourishment of nature. The dress code, however, specifies a garden.
Rachel Zegler
There are songbirds or snakes at the MET Gala, but considering she acted alongside them at the Hunger Games, Rachel Zegler could have gotten a fashion inspiration or two from the rich of Panem.
Jennie
There is no black or pink in Jennie’s look; in fact, there is even almost no fabric.
Nicholas Galitzine
If you’re going to be wearing a normal suit at the MET Gala, it’s best to stay home and perhaps watch Prime Video’s The Idea of You instead. Or Red, White, and Royal Blue. Or Cinderella.
Sabrina Carpenter
She was working late because she’s a singer, not because she’s a designer. Cold foam in an espresso can be a win, but looking like one for the “Espresso” songstress can lose its steam.
At the MET Gala, fashion’s wildest dreams come to life—but there are also some nightmares. Yet, as we navigate extravagant ensembles and thematic interpretations, it’s inevitable that some will stray from the path, failing to embrace the essence of the event. While these deviations may dim the overall spectacle, they become reminders of cohesion. As we pluck another unforgettable MET Gala, we’re left pondering the elusive garden of inspiration, where sometimes, there are looks to be forgotten.
