Maris Racal Performs at a Drag Queen Bar for the First Time

It’s never too late for a party—and a Pride one at that. At the tail end of June, Maris Racal gave a show-stopping performance at O Bar Philippines

Talk about leaving it all on the floor. Maris Racal, actress and artist, showed she knew a thing or two about drag as she danced and dazzled with a performance that stunned the crowd.

O Bar Philippines is the home of iconic drag queens and best drag performances. Drag Race Philippines Season One winner Precious Paula Nicole and Drag Den Season One champion Naia Black; as well as Popstar Bench, Brigiding, and Turing are some of the star performers of the said establishment.

Fashion and Dance for Drag

Last Sunday, it was Maris Racal’s turn to conquer the stage. She delivered sweet and sensual vocals to a remix of Madonna’s “Vogue” and “Like a Prayer,” and SexBomb Girls’ “‘Di Ko Na Mapipigilan.” Clad in a silver corset with embellished rhinestones, stockings and gloves, and a statement feather tail her she performed a tribute to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Her number was a dance party that truly served a heavy dosage of self-confidence, empowerment, and beaming Pride.

Much like fashion and makeup, dance is another ingredient a drag queen incorporates into her drag persona—evident in clubs and reflected on television. Maris’s dance moves mirror this, which mix distinct language and codes from the queer community such as clicks and locking, dramatics and stunts, ultra-feminine posturing, striking arm movements, and poses. The current synergy blended between drag and dance illustrates a profound shift in social attitudes toward the spectrum of gender expression, and has become a liberating form of identity for the queer community.

After the number, the actress said, “Thank you, O Bar, for inviting me…actually, I invited myself. I told O Bar, ‘Let me perform,’ kasi mahal na mahal ko kayong lahat. I feel so safe when I’m with you. It’s such a loving and supportive community, and I want to greet everyone happy Pride.” She also took the time to promote her upcoming movie, Marupok AF, which stars actress EJ Jallorina. The actress also took to TikTok to share her O Bar experience: “Sobrang happy ako sa stage kagabi. Sana mas marami pang moments like that kasi na-realize kong buhay na buhay ako ‘pag nasa stage ako.”

Full Drag Glam Effect

Maris’s glam was full-on drag excellence, too. Drag queens typically go for “heavy-duty” foundation, highlight, and contour, as they require a base that will not budge while performing. There’s also a lot more setting powder and baking involved to make sure the makeup is “beat for the gods”. Maris’s thin eyebrows, red lip, exaggerated blush and highlight, and blended eye makeup made her shine on stage. Her fabulous, flawless, and fresh curls, were also, as they say in Drag Race, crispy.

Drag is meant to be a transformation, so a bold and dramatic face is a big part of her performance
