Should Exes Work Together Again? These Celebrity Pairings Did

Take a look at these pairings who gave their chemistry a second chance after their real-life romance ended—from JaDine and Kimerald to JoshLia

There’s a question that never seems to have a wrong or right answer for every person who dares to ask it: would you ever work with a past lover, and why would you? While it’s definitely a case-by-case situation, there are fields such as show business where running into exes—much less working with them—can happen. But to willingly say yes to a project with them? That’s an act of acceptance, courage, and maturity, all of course depending on how things transpired in the relationship, and how it ended. To be fair, not all romances call for a reunion—not even for fan service. Meanwhile, some past lovers from showbiz have answered the question through a comeback project with their exes.

Nadine Lustre and James Reid worked together after breaking up, starting with their MEGA February 2020 cover
After their November 2019 breakup, JaDine appeared on MEGA’s February 2020 cover shot in Brazil

Here are a few pairings who said yes to rekindling and playing with an old flame; but beware, the after effects vary:

Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto

Starring in a film about exes as exes, JoshLia proved that working with a past lover is indeed possible—but with the right mindset, closure, and boundaries. Although Un/Happy For You was their official comeback as a pairing, the two have also done projects together after their breakup. During the pandemic, Joshua and Julia starred in Star Magic’s video series, Out of the Box. They also gave their supporters a heart-wrenching performance in Moira’s Paubaya music video.

Nadine Lustre and James Reid

Months after their breakup in 2019, James and Nadine, collectively known as JaDine, continued to appear in public together for events and appearances. They even graced MEGA’s February 2020 cover, which was shot in Rio, where they opened up about their separation.

However, their full blown reunion for a project was for Nadine’s album, Wildest Dreams. The two even collaborated for one track called “Complicated Love,” and starred together in the music video of “Ivory.” One can say that their paths first intertwined with music in 2013, and went full circle with that as well.

Angelica Panganiban and Carlo Aquino

From one real-to-reel exes return to another, Angelica and Carlo returned to the big screen as a pairing in 2018 for the Dan Villegas directed film, Exes Baggage. They started out as a teen love team in the 1999 show G-mik, and dated in real life in the same year until 2004. Speaking about their reunion in 2018, the actress pointed out, “Kasi kami naman, naging magkaibigan kami before and after the relationship.”

Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson

For Bea and Gerald’s relationship, it went from real to reel, then back to their real state. In 2010, they had a whirlwind romance that lasted only for months before they parted ways. Six years later, in 2016, they worked for the first time in the film How to be Yours. This then propelled their real-life romance to reignite, which lasted until 2019.

Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gomez

Following their 2012 television comeback as a pairing for Walang Hanggan, they also brought back their cinematic chemistry in 2014 for She’s Dating the Gangster. Richard and Dawn played the older versions of Kenji and Athena, respectively, the characters of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. They continued to work together in the following year for the teleserye You’re My Home and another movie called The Love Affair

Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla

16 years since their 2001 movie Pagdating ng Panahon, real-life exes Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla brought their chemistry back on screen in the 2017 film Unexpectedly Yours alongside Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. The past lovers took their reel chemistry to reality in 1991 during their shooting for Maging Sino Ka Man. During the promotion of their comeback film, they revealed that they even had plans of getting married but did not push through.

Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson

For lovers, there’s an infamous thing such as the seven-year itch. But for exes Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, they had a seven-year return to their love team Kimerald for their reunion teleserye, Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin. During a conversation with Vice Ganda, past PBB housemates looked back on their relationship, sharing that gift giving was their love language in the span of their four-year relationship.
