The Female Heroines in Squid Game Continue to Stand Out in Season 2

Squid Game not only brought an interesting story with tense games but also an amazing set of women we all fell in love with. Which female player did you resonate with?

In the first season of Squid Game, everyone fell head over heels with Player 067, Kang Sae-byok, played by model and award-winning actress Jung Ho-yeon. Not only was she a pretty face, but her incredible acting skills—which is also her debut role—had us rooting for her until her heartbreaking end. At some point, we were hoping that she would make a comeback for the second season. While this didn’t happen, we did fall in love with a few more women in ‘Squid Game’, including player 222, Jun-Hee played by Jo Yuri, Korean idol and actress; player 380, Se-Mi played by Won Ji-an, known for her roles in If You Wish Upon Me and Heartbeat; and solder 011, Kang No-eul played by Park Gyu-young, known for her roles in Sweet Home, Dali & Cocky Prince, and A Good Day To Be A Dog.

Genuine Friendships

While the concept of Squid Game entails a singular winner, it has brought comfort for many players to have allies and close friends. To us viewers, it brought heartache and tears. One of the most memorable friendships in the series was Sae-byok’s bond with Player 240, Ji-yeong, who was recruited to join their tug-of-war team in the third game. We all teared up a little at player 240’s sacrifice, even the actress Ho-yeon shed a few tears after the scene.

Season two's favorite short-lived friendship was Hyun-ju and Young-mi's, which featured a heartwarming bond, especially for Hyun-ju as she finally felt seen as a transwoman

As for season two, we have to give it to transwoman player 120, Hyun-ju and his friendship with Player 095, Young-mi, the first player to acknowledge Hyun-ju after being rejected by a group of men. While it was a short-lived friendship, we were all rooting for the two’s survival until the unfortunate death of Young-mi in the next game.

Unselfish Reasons

All the players of the games need money, whether it’s to pay off their debts, to cure their family members, or due to some bad decisions, the prize money is more than enough. It’s perfectly normal to have selfish reasons, but we can’t help but reach our hearts out to those like season two’s Jun-hee, who chose to play the games with the intention of raising her baby on her own, which explained why a pregnant woman was in the life-threatening games.

Instead of getting the child aborted like what the father Myung-gi asked, Jun-hee decided to raise the baby on her own, which led to her joining the games

Sae-byok also had unselfish reasons. Prior to the games, she and her family fled from North Korea, which led to the death of her father, her mother getting caught, and her younger brother in a shelter. She agreed to join the Squid Game to use the money to find her captured mother and to bring her brother out of the shelter.

Empathetic and kind-hearted Geum-ja is the most selfless player in the games

Of course, we can’t forget the headstrong mother—player 149. Time and time again, Geum-ja has been proven wrong by her son, but still, she believed the good in her son despite betraying her trust. Aside from her unwavering love for her son, Geum-ja grew protective over Jun-hee, making sure that the pregnant woman was well taken care of. Player 149 also kept an open mind towards Hyun-ju, opening her arms, her heart, and her home to the transwoman. Geum-ja is arguably the most selfless player in the entire series.

Strong and Brave Fighters

And of course, we love strong and independent women. Season two introduced us to a Squid Game soldier this time, whose purpose is to eliminate the losers. No-eul is an interesting character because we get a glimpse into the mind of a soldier working for the games. Sniper in hand, she already looks like a tough woman, especially when she stood her ground against her officer in command.

With a mission to help people pass without pain, No-eul took the job of a soldier, which Netflix kept a secret to avoid spoilers of what could be a game-changing role

Another new character is player 380, Se-mi, who was part of Thanos’ inner circle. She’s a memorable character not just because of her face card, but also because of her honesty. When meek player 125, Min-su asked if she was scared to keep playing, Se-mi admitted that of course, she was scared. Due to her personal motivations, she kept playing, showing how brave she was. Player 380 may have limited screen time and a disappointing death according to some netizens, but her choice to stand up and fight despite the unfortunate odds makes her a character to remember.
