Dahlia “Lil” Macapagal from Magic Kingdom: Ang Alamat ng Damortis

Making her movie acting debut at 12 years old, Anne Curtis first landed on the silver screen in Magic Kingdom: Ang Alamat ng Damortis playing Princess Dahlia. The fantasy-adventure film from Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes served as a sequel to 1996’s Magic Temple and was an entry in the 1997 Metro Manila Film Festival. Even for her first movie and one of her first acting roles in general, Anne proved that she had the potential to portray a young yet headstrong character who had to deal with the pressures of her heritage.

Melissa/Nina from ‘Wag Kang Lilingon

The beauty of this Anne Curtis performance is just how unexpected a turn it is. This 2006 Filipino horror anthology movie from Jerry Lopez Sineneng and Quark Henares is best enjoyed unspoiled, but we’ll just say that if you think you know where Anne’s character is going, the film has surprises for you in this hauntingly memorable role from the actress.

One of the things we love about Anne is how she effortlessly, and often unintentionally, combines Pinoy humor with an upper-class persona. Her role in this Wenn V. Deramas classic is one of the earliest and best showcases of that. Anne plays Christine Outback, a young Filipino-Australian woman who discovers that her Australian father, Jack, is still in love with her Filipina mother, Georgia, much to her dismay. So, she flies to the Philippines with her nanny to prevent their marriage from happening. The film smartly plays on Anne’s Australian heritage and combines it with the director’s signature Filipino comedic style, making for a character who gets you with her charm and humor.

Kara Zalderiaga from No Other Woman

There have been many kabit roles in local cinema over the decades, but few have done it as well as Anne Curtis in this box-office record-breaking Ruel S. Bayani romantic drama. In it, Anne plays Kara, the daughter of a resort owner who works with Derek Ramsay’s Ram. However, their professional relationship turns romantic when Kara seduces Ram, which causes his wife, Charmaine (Cristine Reyes), to step in and fight for her husband. The character gives Anne a lot of room to utilize her beauty, sultry aura, and one-liners to remember.

Zoe Tuazon from The Gifted

Anne Curtis reunites with Cristine Reyes in this romantic comedy that highlights how the former can do well in both dramatic and comedic roles. Here, we follow two frenemies, Zoe Tuazon and Aica Tabayoyong, who are engaged in an academic rivalry in school. When they get older, they both experience a glow-up as they compete one more time as adults, but this time to compete for Mark’s (Sam Milby) affection. While the fat suit Anne wears as the young Zoe feels like a product of its time, the actress still delivers with witty lines, iconic comebacks, and undeniable charisma. Also, stay until the end for a clever ending you won’t see coming.

Aya from Sid & Aya: Not a Love Story

Great actors know how to play against type for a performance that goes beyond typical genre expectations. Such is the case in this film from Irene Villaflor. In it, Anne plays Aya, a woman who is hired by insomniac businessman Sid, played by Dingdong Dantes, to keep him company when he can’t fall asleep. As compared to her previous romantic roles, Aya is a nuanced character who has a lot more depth than some would assume, showcasing Anne in a different, more mature light that gives a deeper look into love and human connection.

Nina Manigan from BuyBust

Who says Anne Curtis is just a pretty face? Erik Matti’s action thriller stars the seasoned actress as Nina Manigan, an anti-narcotics police officer leading a massive drug bust. But what should be a simple operation quickly goes sideways as Nina and her team must fight their way out of deadly enemy territory and gangs of thugs who want them dead. With the performance, Anne proved that she can be a capable action star with how she handled the gritty role and its many demanding stunt and fight choreography. With the long-awaited sequel finally coming as a series on Netflix this year, we’ll be seeing a lot more of the badass Nina real soon.
