18th Rose – A Friends-to-Lovers Tale in Romblon

From director Dolly Dulu comes a rom-com featuring Kyle Echarri and Xyriel Manabat, who reunite after working on the series Senior High. Set in the early 2000s in Romblon, the two Gen Z actors will play Rose and Jordan, two high school students and longtime best friends who fall in love with each other. Making the nostalgic friends-to-lovers project more exciting is that it serves as Xyriel’s first leading role in a movie, giving the actress a new vehicle to showcase her talents. The film will begin streaming on Netflix on April 9.

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon – Pinoy Family Drama

Comedy and drama meet in this movie directed by Cholo Laurel and starring Jodi Sta. Maria and Agot Isidro. The two veteran actresses will play rival family members Joe and Paz, and will dive into the family-centric culture of Filipinos and the friction that it causes when conflicts arise within a family. The family drama and character study will be available on Netflix starting August 13.

Balaraw – Filipino Supernatural Horror

What happens when you marry sapphic love, supernatural horror, and Filipino folklore? It may look something like Balaraw, a new movie from Rae Red, who has been making a name for herself with her female-led thrillers like Babae at Baril and Roadkillers. Janine Gutierrez and Charlie Dizon play a couple who travel to the mysterious island of Balaraw in search of the former character’s mother, played by Agot Isidro. On their quest, they come across supernatural entities and the mysteries surrounding the island. Considering that we rarely, if ever, get local sapphic horror movies, this film has our attention. It will premiere on Netflix on September 24.

Paskong Pinoy – It’s a Filipino Christmas

Given how Christmas is deeply ingrained in Philippine culture, it really was only a matter of time before Netflix Philippines jumped on the bandwagon with an original series. The aptly titled Paskong Pinoy is directed by Mark Reyes and is the streamer’s first Christmas-themed anthology series. Each of the show’s four episodes will center on a different aspect of the season and what it means for Filipinos.

One episode, titled A Perfect Christmas, will see the first on-screen team-up of Barbie Forteza and Enchong Dee, while another, The Last New Year in Boracay, will feature the cast of 90s teen series T.G.I.S with Angelu de Leon, Bobby Andrews, and Rica Peralejo reuniting in the throwback episode. The show will come to Netflix just in time for Christmas on December 3.

BuyBust: The Undesirables -A New Chapter in the Criminal Underworld

We’ve known that a sequel to the 2018 action-crime thriller BuyBust was coming, but we finally got our clearest look at it yet, now that it’s exclusively coming to Netflix. The original nine-episode series is titled BuyBust: The Undesirables, and will see Anne Curtis reprise her role as former police officer Nina Manigan and have Erik Matti return to the director’s chair.

Notably, Gerald Anderson will be jumping onboard the gritty sequel as a corporate outcast who crosses paths with Nina. The plot will see the two team up after being brought together by the murder of the senator’s daughter to hunt down a drug lord known as Judas. The series has no release date yet as of this writing.

The Master Cutter – Double Life, Double Drama

Aside from these originals, Netflix Philippines will also stream episodes of a couple of highly-anticipated shows on the platform 72 hours before they air on TV.

The first is GMA’s The Master Cutter, which sees the return of Dingdong Dantes to Kapuso primetime. He’ll play Anthony, a former scout ranger who lives a double life. By day, he’s a tailor, but at night, he’s an elite bounty hunter. Dominic Zapata will direct the action-drama series, with Max Collins, Shuvee Etrata, and Paolo Contis also joining the cast.

Someone, Someday – Love Is out There

someone, someday

The second show to air early on Netflix is Someone, Someday, a rom-com that notably features the first pairing of Kathryn Bernardo and James Reid in a project, as well as Maja Salvador, in what will be the trio’s TV comeback. The ABS-CBN show directed by Dolly Dulu and Chad Vidanes will follow a young woman who builds a dating app to help women find love and potentially form a romantic relationship with her male best friend. As for how Maja’s character comes into the mix, she seems to play a woman who may or may not be hiding ulterior motives.
