Our Favorite Moments From the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special

Happy “Hannahversary” to all those who celebrate. Hannah Montana, the show and the character, has been a pop culture icon since the series first aired in 2006. However, her resurgence in 2026 feels even more potent with the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special and Miley Cyrus’ nostalgic promo for it. More than just a throwback, the special serves as a celebration for both the fans and Miley herself, who shared during the special that it felt like a merging of Miley and Hannah as compared to when she used to see Hannah as separate from Miley.

In the one-hour-long program, Miley Cyrus returns to the set of the hit Disney Channel show, looking back and reflecting on the series, her past, Hannah’s cultural impact, and much more. Below, we rounded up some of the special’s highlights that were a treat for fans and maybe even helped heal our younger selves.

Miley Promoted the Special Even Though It Didn’t Exist

They say you miss all the shots you don’t take. And in Miley’s case, that meant talking about plans for Hannah Montana’s 20th anniversary even though nothing was in the works. As she shared with Alex Cooper, she recalled advice from her aunt Dolly Parton to “promote something before it’s happening because then they can’t say no.” That manifested in Miley intentionally talking about a supposed “Hannahversary” to the press despite no plans being made at the time, which led to confusion from her team. You could say Miley manifested the moment.

Performing Some of Hannah’s Biggest Hits

The moment the special begins with Miley on stage performing Best of Both Worlds in front of over 200 superfans at Sunset Gower Studios in Los Angeles, it felt like we were right back in 2006 watching Hannah do the same thing on the pilot episode. The special’s setlist also included a mashup of fan favorites This is the Life and The Climb, two tracks that are rarely performed live.

Miley’s more mature vocals give the songs a more adult but still recognizable sound, while the looks she chose are a peek of what a Hannah Montana in her 30s would dress like, and she’d still be fabulous. And for good measure, there’s even a scene of Miley doing the Hoedown Throwdown dance.

Recreation of the Show’s Sets

In a treat for fans, the sets for the Stewart family living room and Hannah Montana’s enviable closet were recreated on a soundstage just for the special. They look exactly like how we last saw them years ago, from the legs table to Hannah’s moving closet and other references and easter eggs for fans to catch. It was during this segment that we also got the interesting tidbit that Miley’s mother, Tish Cyrus, played a big part in shaping the character’s look by differentiating what fit for Miley and what fit for Hannah.

Cameo Appearances

The special featured multiple guest stars who had ties to the show. Most notably, Miley Cyrus had a long-awaited reunion with Selena Gomez, who famously played Hannah’s pop star rival, Mikayla. Dressed in Mikayla’s signature red, Selena reminisced with Miley on their time together on the show, with Miley even gifting Selena Mikayla’s red hat. Chappell Roan also made an appearance as she thanked Miley for the work she’s done to pave the way for artists like her, especially when it comes to dealing with photographers on the red carpet and public scrutiny.

And while they didn’t appear in person, a handful of stars were also mentioned in the program. There was Miley’s friendship with Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens during their High School Musical era, as she shared how she thought they were the coolest and that they brought Miley along to events. As for how Taylor Swift appeared in the Hannah Montana movie, Miley revealed that the producers were looking for someone who could realistically perform at a barn, and Taylor, who wrote two songs for the film, was the pick.

Miley Recreating a Viral Hannah Montana Meme

We already love how the special features the show’s signature transition music like it was an actual episode. But the fact that Miley actually recreated the meme from the show where she leaves her home and waves goodbye in an overly dramatic fashion is a winner in our book. Miley Cyrus is a lot of things, and being dedicated to get the job done is one of them.

A New Song From Hannah Montana

Closing the special is a performance of a new song dedicated to Miley’s time on the show, the fans that have stood by her after all these years, and a general ode to a childhood many still cherish. The tender track touches on the heartstrings as it feels like Hannah is checking up on an older her and reminisces about the joys of her youth, which is made even more heartfelt as clips from Hannah Montana play in the background.

As Miley tells the camera, “It’s been an honor to celebrate 20 years with Hannah Montana, and I’ve looked back at every memory with a heart full of love. Hannah, she gave me my start, but my fans gave me this life.”
