Cinema Releases
The Bride!
If last year was all about Frankenstein and his monster, this year, the focus is on his bride. From Maggie Gyllenhaal comes this twisted tale about a lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman, and The Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined as they become outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance. The movie will come to local cinemas on March 4.
Hoppers
Combine Avatar, a pro-nature message, and Pixar’s signature storytelling, and you’ll get this new original animated movie from the legendary studio that’s directed by Daniel Chong, the creator of We Bare Bears. In it, we follow Mabel, a 19-year-old environmentalist who sets out to save a local reserve from being destroyed by a highway construction project.
This leads her to discover a secret project where humans can transfer their consciousness into robotic animals. Doing so with a robotic beaver, Mabel immerses herself in the animal world as she learns secrets beyond her imagination. Early reviews have this movie as one of Pixar’s best in years, and it will screen in local cinemas on March 4.
Sisa
Hilda Koronel is making her acting comeback after a 13-year hiatus in this dark drama that combines fiction with real-world tragedies. Set during the final years of the Philippine-American War, the movie centers on a woman who is deemed crazy after witnessing the massacre of her community. But her insanity also serves as her disguise to get her revenge on the people who wronged her. It should be noted, though, that this isn’t the same Sisa from Noli Me Tángere but a different character.
Joining Hilda Koronel in the cast are Eugene Domingo, Jennica Garcia, Tanya Gomez, Barbara Miguel, and Romnick Sarmenta, with Jun Robles Lana serving as the director. The movie will come to local cinemas on March 4.
Reminders of Him
The latest Colleen Hoover adaptation tells the story of Kenna (Maika Monroe), a woman who makes a grave mistake that lands her in prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns to her hometown, hoping to rebuild her life and earn the chance to reunite with her young daughter, Diem, whom she has never known.
When Diem’s custodial grandparents refuse Kenna’s attempts to see her daughter, Kenna discovers unexpected compassion, and then something truer and deeper, with former NFL player and local bar owner Ledger (Tyriq Withers). As their secret romance develops, so do the dangers for both of them, leading Kenna toward heartbreak and, ultimately, the hope for a second chance. You can watch this in local cinemas beginning March 11.
A Special Memory
From director Jerry Lopez Sineneng and a screenplay by National Artist Ricky Lee comes this romantic drama featuring Bela Padilla and Carlo Aquino. A Philippine adaptation of the Japanese series Pure Soul, A Special Memory follows Sandra, a fashion designer whose impulsive nature masks the heartbreak of a past relationship. As she seeks to rebuild her life, she meets Dindo, a construction foreman in her family’s company.
Drawn together by fate, they fall in love and move in together. But then, Sandra is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and everything changes. Fearful of becoming a burden, she makes the choice of admitting herself to a nursing home. Though heartbroken, Dindo still visits Sandra at the nursing home and, over time, reintroduces himself to her, rebuilding their connection one gentle moment at a time. You can watch this in local cinemas on March 11.

After a successful first lineup in February, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is bringing the second wave of FDCP Presents: A Curation of World Cinema this month. And arguably the biggest title on the lineup is the critically-acclaimed The Secret Agent. Set during the Brazilian military dictatorship, the movie follows Armando (Wagner Moura), a former professor caught in the political turmoil as he attempts to flee persecution and resist an authoritarian regime. The film and three other global movies will play in select local cinemas from March 11-17.
Project Hail Mary
Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) seems like your unlikely hero. But when the world faces a grave threat, when the sun begins to die out, he is chosen by the government to head to space and solve this crisis. He isn’t doing it alone, though, as he encounters an alien and forms an unexpected friendship as they work together to save Earth from extinction. The movie will play in cinemas on March 18.
Mudborn
When it comes to Asian horror, don’t sleep on Taiwan because they know how to make good horror movies. Such is the case with this blockbuster that’s coming to Philippine cinemas. Mudborn tells the story of a VR game developer named Hsu-Chuan (Yo Yang), who accidentally brings home a broken clay baby doll from a haunted house. His pregnant wife, Muhua (Cecilia Choi), an artifact conservator, becomes obsessed with the doll and continues restoring it.
As strange and terrifying events unfold in their family, they seek the help of a psychic exorcist to uncover the horrifying secrets behind the doll and the forbidden curses of the “rhyme” that bind it. See it for yourself starting March 18.
They Will Kill You
March is an unexpectedly big month for bloody horror-action comedies. Up first is this movie, which centers on a young woman who must survive the night at the Virgil, a demonic cult’s mysterious and twisted death-trap of a lair, before becoming their next offering in a uniquely brazen, big-screen battle of wild kills and wickedly dark humor. It will come to local cinemas on March 25.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
The second high-octane bloodbath is the long-awaited sequel to the sleeper hit Ready or Not. Grace MacCaullay, the sole survivor of a brutal “game” of hide and seek she played with her new family that resulted in the deaths of her husband and in-laws, learns that her ordeal isn’t over as the wealthiest and most influential families on Earth now have to kill her in a new game or else lose all their power.
Grace refuses to participate at first but is left with no choice when she learns that her younger sister, Faith, has also been marked for death and must protect her at all costs. See if Grace and Faith make it out alive when the film plays in local cinemas on March 25.
