Palacios recalls the joy and unity that her win brought to her homeland. “I feel very fortunate to be the first Central American and Nicaraguan to win Miss Universe. This has been a ray of hope and motivation for future women who want to participate in Miss Universe. For my country, that night represented unity, and now I can say that Nicaragua is on the map. It fills me with so much joy to know that everyone now knows where my country is located. I represent the dream of all my people, and they live with me every step I take as their Miss Universe,” she shares.
Throughout her reign, Palacios has experienced numerous memorable moments. One highlight was witnessing the celebrations in Nicaragua after her coronation. The love and support from her countrymen were overwhelming. Additionally, her travels have left traces on her heart. She reminisces, Each of my trips has been very special. My first Christmas in the United States, visiting my favorite countries like Mexico, Brazil, Greece, and of course, the Asia tour has been extraordinary and a memory in my heart forever.”
Palacios’ Passion
The Miss Universe 2023’s commitment to mental health advocacy, particularly through her initiative “Understand Your Mind,” has profoundly influenced her role as Miss Universe. She understands the responsibility that comes with being a mental health activist. “Being a mental health activist is synonymous with responsibility. It’s not just about talking about a sensitive issue; it’s about breaking the stigma and helping those who need the necessary tools for better emotional management. One of my purposes is to continue working for mental health even after my reign and to continue serving this topic that needs visibility.”
Addressing mental health issues in a country where they are rarely discussed poses significant challenges. However, Palacios was heartened by the acceptance and respect she received from the public. “It’s important to know that mental health is still stigmatized globally, and talking about it was ready to overcome any challenge. However, I was surprised to receive acceptance and respect from the public regarding this issue,” she notes.
As Palacios transitions from being Miss Universe to life after the crown, her dedication to mental health advocacy remains steadfast. She is determined to continue her work in this field, driven by personal experiences and a deep sense of service. “I started my mental health project from a personal experience, meaning I started it out of love and with the goal of helping those going through the same thing as me,” she says with optimism.
A Gem Amongst Crowns
Reflecting on her time as Miss Universe, Palacios has gained invaluable insights and lessons that will guide her future endeavors. She embraces each day as an opportunity to learn and grow. “Every day, I learn something new, and I firmly believe that each morning is a new opportunity to learn,” she reflects. “Life is full of opportunities, and it’s one’s decision whether to take them. I am one who takes them and works diligently for them. I learned that this is a stage of my life that I must live to the fullest, that it’s the result of my efforts and sacrifices, that I am a fortunate and privileged woman to be in this position, and that it depends on me to build the future I want.”
Palacios has ambitious aspirations both personally and professionally. “I am a very dreamy person, so I see myself forming a family, experiencing motherhood, and continuing to venture into new projects.” She aims to practice each branch of her profession as a social communicator, exploring audiovisual production, radio, press, and photography, even considering stepping out of her comfort zone into acting.
Sheynnis Palacios’ crown has brought pride to Nicaragua while also spotlighting the significance of mental health awareness. Her portrayal of kindness and strength is certain to impact future generations. With or without the crown, Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis Palacios continues to sparkle, pointing out that the real meaning of beauty is found in the heart and soul.
