Leading this adaptation and joining forces are singer-songwriter Ariana Grande and award-winning musical actress Cynthia Erivo, playing as Galinda Upland and the green-skinned Elphaba Thropp respectively.
Based on the classic story of The Wizard of Oz, Wicked revolves around Elphaba, a misunderstood woman due to her green skin who befriends Glinda, a popular girl at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. Elphaba brings Galinda to meet the Wizard of Oz, and in doing so, the two’s friendship has reached a rocky road, perhaps even leading to broken brick road.
Gladiator 2
Coming to conquer alongside Wicked on November 20 is the sequel to the Oscar-winning film Gladiator, which was released in 2000. Starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington, Gladiator 2 continues the epic tale of power, betrayal, and revenge in Ancient Rome.
Years after witnessing the death of the legendary hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) fights in the Colosseum after his home is overtaken by the brutal and ruthless Emperors who now rule Rome. Driven by anger and with the fate of the Empire hanging in the balance, Lucius must draw upon his past to find the strength and honor needed to restore Rome’s glory to its people.
Moana 2
Eight years after the release of Moana, the princess and chief of Motunui is back with another adventure across the ocean on November 27. Reprising their roles are Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui. Joining the wayfinder crew are Rose Matafeo as the smart and quirky Loto, and David Fane as the grumper farmer Kele.
Three years after the events of the first film, Chief Moana, Maui, and the new wayfinders are off to journey across the ocean once more, answering the call from the chief’s wayfinding ancestors. In doing so, the crew face both familiar and new enemies, including the coconut-like pirates Kakamora and the underworld goddess Matangi.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Rejoice, Lord of the Rings fans! Coming on December 11 is an animated fantasy film based on the screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews and Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou, based on the characters created by J. R. R. Tolkien. With the film announced in June 2021, this animated film has been in production for three years now.
Set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim recounts the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they protect their kingdom from an invading Dunlending army. Helm’s actions lead to the naming of the iconic stronghold, Helm’s Deep.
Mufasa: The Lion King
The last of this year’s highly anticipated films is Mufasa: The Lion King, which will be released on December 20. This musical drama will serve as both a prequel and a sequel to the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Aaron Pierre will portray the king of the jungle, Kelvin Harrisson Jr. will play Scar, John Kani will voice Rafiki, and Donald Glover for Simba.
With this film serving as a sequel, Rafiki recounts the legend of Mufasa to Simba’s daughter Kiara. Told in flashbacks, Mufasa was an orphaned cub when he met Taka, heir to Pride Rock. This encounter sparks a vast journey for a remarkable group of outcasts, each seeking their purpose. Their connections will be challenged as they join forces to escape a dangerous and lethal enemy, leading us to the broken connection of Mufasa and Scar as we know it today.
