EXCLUSIVE: How Jo Rubio Wove a Father’s Legacy Into Aika Robredo’s Bridal Gown
On a bride’s most special day, the gown she dons speaks volumes about the stories she carries. A wedding is when a woman steps out of one life and into another, and love converges with memory before she begins anew. Long before the vows are spoken, what she wears already tells a story of continuity, stitched on every seam. For some brides, they choose tradition. For others, reinvention.
And for Aika Robredo, daughter of Mayor Leni Robredo, she chose to honor her late father’s memory.

A Love Letter in Piña
On the day Aika and Jim Guzman were wed, she walked down the aisle in a modern Filipiniana made with piña fabrics repurposed from the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo’s barongs. This intimate collaboration was led by Filipino designer Jo Rubio, whose past works made him the ideal storyteller for such a deeply personal narrative. Though he was given complete trust, he admits he found it more challenging.
“I have done many intricate and exquisite gowns,” Rubio says, “but to be entrusted with heirloom pieces is a whole different thing.” Handling the fragile piña fabric from Jesse Robredo’s barongs demanded meticulous care and adaptive techniques. Each fragment varied in width and pattern, so he and his team were creatively put to the test.
A Tribute Worn Close to the Heart
Often, fabrics from old bridal gowns passed down by a mother or grandmother are used to create a new ensemble for the bride. With the barongs given to him, Rubio likens the experience to assembling a puzzle without knowing the final image. Throughout the process, adjustments were frequent. “Every now and then, we kept on changing and re-draping it so that we could improve the entire look,” he recalls. Each placement was deliberate until the creation emerged as a coherent whole.
On Aika, the piece indeed appeared harmonious. The piña enveloped her and sat close to her heart—a loving tribute to a man who nurtured her and taught her the virtues that helped in shaping her persona. Rubio reflects that this was a deeper and more fulfilling project for him.
In honoring her father through her wedding garment, Aika Robredo carried his memory forward as she stepped into married life with Jim Guzman—because even as new chapters begin, love and legacy remain beautifully intertwined.
