Life After the Upside Down: What to Stream Following the Stranger Things Finale

Without exaggeration, people are grieving. After nine years of watching a ragtag group grow from D&D-playing kids into battle-hardened young adults, Stranger Things has finally ended on a bittersweet note. The gate is closed and we’re now left with a massive hole in our cultural diet. And while some are finding comfort listening to Prince’s Purple Rain that played in the finale, others are already searching for similar stories for a semblance of familiarity.

So, if you’re looking to chase that same high of supernatural dread, small-town secrets, and morally questionable decisions, here is your curated survival guide for the post-Hawkins void.

IT: Welcome to Derry

STEPHEN KING APPROVED

Genre: Horror, Mystery

If your favorite part of Stranger Things was the “kids on bikes vs. ancient evil” trope, then Derry is your next destination. Serving as a prequel to the IT films, this series dives into the origins of the most infamous clown in pop culture history. But what makes it even better is how it tackles real-world issues such as racism, marginalization, class disparity, and military deception. It’s much darker and more violent than the movies. You’ve been warned.

I Am Not Okay With This

BASED ON CHARLES FORSMAN'S COMIC

Genre: Science Fiction, Black Comedy

Think of this as the Eleven experience, but with significantly more teenage angst and less government interference. It follows a girl navigating the horrors of high school while discovering she has telekinetic powers that manifest in…messy ways. It captures that specific outsider loneliness surrounded by retro-alternative bliss. The only downside is that it was canceled after one season, yet it’s still worth the watch if you enjoy the journey over the resolution.

Midnight Mass

WONDERFUL AND HARROWING
WONDERFUL AND HARROWING

Genre: Horror, Mystery

Midnight Mass hits a very specific nerve for those who grew up in strict religious environments. Set on an isolated island, a charismatic priest arrives and brings “miracles” that come with a heavy, bloody price. It’s a slow-burn masterpiece that explores faith, addiction, and the paranormal with a level of honesty that feels very human.

Fargo

CHRONICLES OF DECEPTION AND INTRIGUE
CHRONICLES OF DECEPTION AND INTRIGUE

Genre: Crime Thriller, Black Comedy

An anthology series inspired by the 1996 movie of the same name, Fargo is arguably one of the most compelling shows on television. A terrible incident in a small town in Minnesota spirals into a sprawling, chaotic conspiracy. There are syndicates, hitmen, religious figures, and even aliens. No, we won’t explain further. Just try not to get too attached to the characters; most of them are morally gray at best and sociopathic at worst.

Grief is a heavy word for a TV show, but when you’ve spent nearly a decade in the trenches of the Upside Down, it fits. The best part about endings, though, is that they make room for new beginnings to immerse ourselves in.
