21-Year-Old Filipina Musician Gwyn Dorado Just Made History On Sing Again Season 4

Filipino talent has been, is, and will continue to be worthy of the global stage. Time and time again, many Filipinos have proven themselves not just locally, but also in the world spotlight. And recently, another Filipino did just that with the recent success of 21-year-old Filipino singer-songwriter Gwyn Dorado on the Korean singing competition Sing Again Season 4.

Historic Finish

Gwyn, who competed on the show as Contestant No. 59 among 81 contestants, made it all the way to the finale, where she ultimately finished second, falling just shy of the grand prize behind winner Lee Oh Wook. During the finale on January 6, she performed Light Up, a new song produced by Korean duo GroovyRoom, earning a near-perfect score of 799/800 from the judges and 1,409.54 points in total, while Lee Oh Wook edged her out with a final score of 1,415.30 points.

Still, with her second-place finish, Gwyn made history as the only Filipino and foreign contestant to have made it to the final round, and she also isn’t going home empty handed as she took home a cash prize of 30 million Korean won (just over 1.2 million pesos based on current exchange rates). The finale served as an impressive cap to what was a stellar and record-breaking season for her.

Gwyn routinely impressed the judges (with included Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, among others) with her singing, notably scoring a stellar 798/800 from the judges and a 283/300 score from the onsite audience after performing I Want You, an original track she worked on with one of the show’s producers, Kim Do Hun. That judges score marked the highest score in the season’s history, and she did all that while singing fluently in Korean. In a competition that had its fair share of seasoned Korean contestants, Gwyn proved her worth and that her skills were real.

“Sing Again journey has been a wild ride and it’s about to be even wilder. I’ve always taken the ballad genre path since I’ve started Sing Again but I want to end it with a new side of me as to show a new beginning,” she wrote in an Instagram caption reflecting on her journey on the show. “It’s been tough being confident with this new side of me but thanks to Producer Groovy Room for helping me find my groove. Now, I’m ready to show it.”

A Rising Star

Sing Again is a Korean singing competition that’s specifically made for singers and musicians who may not have gotten the shot they deserved or whose careers may have stalled. The show’s title, Sing Again, implores the contestants to do just that and reintroduce themselves to a new audience.

For Gwyn, it’s been a journey long in the works. She’s actually no stranger to performing in front of global audiences and shows. Back in 2015, at just 10 years old, she competed on Asia’s Got Talent, where she got an enthusiastic yes from all four judges, with David Foster himself signing the guitar Gwyn used. She would later go on to finish the season as a finalist, and she even sang the Philippine national anthem at the 2015 SONA later that same year. In 2024 she moved to South Korea when she signed a five-year contract with AO Entertainment and curretnly goes by the stage name Dorado. She’s proven that she has the talent, and more people are now getting to see it.

At just 21 years old and with new opportunities in Korea, it will be exciting to see Gwyn continue her musical journey.
